The Bethesda System is a standardized classification system used for reporting and interpreting cervical and vaginal cytology (Pap smear) results. It was developed by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the American Society for Cytopathology (ASC) to provide consistent terminology and guidelines for reporting and managing abnormal cervical cell findings. The system categorizes cytology results into specific diagnostic categories, ranging from normal to various degrees of abnormality, to aid in the detection and management of cervical cancer and precancerous lesions.
