Streptococcus pyogenes, also known as Group A Streptococcus (GAS), is a type of bacteria that can cause various infections in humans. It is commonly associated with strep throat, a common bacterial infection of the throat and tonsils. However, it can also cause other infections such as skin infections, impetigo, cellulitis, and invasive diseases like pneumonia and necrotizing fasciitis (a severe skin infection that affects the deeper layers of the skin and subcutaneous tissues). Streptococcus pyogenes is highly contagious and can spread through respiratory droplets or direct contact with infected individuals. It is important to seek medical attention if you suspect an infection caused by this bacterium, as it can be treated with antibiotics.
